High caloric diets and refined and processed foods with sedentary lifestyle can be responsible for high prevalence of diabetes. The calories can also vary in different age groups. According to the physical activity the caloric requirement of the person can change. If the physical activity is high, the requirement is increased accordingly.
Diabetics need not restrict the carbohydrate intake but the can alter the type of carbohydrate that is being consumed. Opt for whole foods like whole grains or pulses rather than refined foods like white flour or refined sugar, candies, sweets and jellies. Good supply of carbohydrates that are rich in fiber can improve the glucose tolerance.
The dietary allowance of protein in diabetics should be equal to normal individuals. Vegetable proteins are preferable as it doesn't contribute to cholesterol. Avoid high fat milk and meat as it can increase the lipid level. Instead go for skimmed milk and lean meat.
The fat levels in the body are generally raised in diabetics. Hence the individual needs to be careful about the amount and nature of fat consumed. Avoid animal fats or hydrogenated fats. Prefer vegetable oils like ground nut oil and rice bran oil. They can consume fish in natural form and avoid the supplements of fish oil.
Vitamins and minerals can be supplied as it is given in normal individuals. Supplements may be recommended for patients consuming a calorie restricted diet, strict vegetarian, elderly and pregnant women or patient in critical care surrounding.
With few changes in the diet, person suffering from diabetes can lead a normal life.
