Balanced Diet Food Pyramid Tips Food pyramid diet has the basic five food groups, in the order of preference. When eaten in right quantities, they ensure overall well being and good health. It is a tool to help each individual, to eat in a better manner. As the name indicates, it is pyramid shaped or triangular with the base comprising of cereals. The shape indicates the place of interest, while choosing foods. Foods towards the apex are those that are eaten sparingly. Foods to be eaten more form the base. It is a trustworthy guide to eat right. Weight control and exercise are two important criteria on which the whole pyramid rests. About six to eleven servings of cereals are recommended. Avoid refined foods and opt for wholesome and fresh foods. Whole grains, cereals, pulses and legumes provide fibre in the diet. Three to five servings of vegetables and two to four servings of fruits provide the necessary antioxidants and phytonutrients. Animal foods in the form of fish, meat, egg and poultry provide high quality protein or protein of high biological value. Dairy products provide vitamin D and calcium, in addition to protein, in vegetarians. Fats and oils are used in a sparing manner. Oils are essential to a certain extent in the absorption of nutrients, such as fat soluble vitamins. Saturated and Trans fats are avoided. Skimmed milk or low fat milk and related products are preferred. Peanut butter is a good alternative for margarine and butter. Oils are a good substitute for solid fats. A healthy lifestyle is also essential. Smoking and alcoholic beverages are not permitted. Research reveals the fact that, adherence to the food pyramid diet helps in reducing the cholesterol levels, thereby decreasing the risk of stroke. Reading the labels is also another way of making smart food choices. |
