Risks of junk foodAlmost 25% of Americans acknowledge preferring junk foods over healthy foods. Unfortunately, this is a very unhealthy trend that has made childhood obesity rampant in the country. In addition to obesity, lifestyle diseases like diabetes and hypertension are on the rise, and it can all be accounted to increased consumption of junk foods.
The health risks of junk food are many and range from obesity to increased cases of depression and heart attack. Further, while junk foods have adverse effects on the health of both children and adults, they are especially unhealthy for growing children, pregnant women, and people recovering from serious illnesses. The many hazards of eating junk foods include increased risk of lifestyle-related disorders such as type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease, arterial plaque, increased blood pressure, stroke and infections. In children, junk foods are known to cause hyperactivity and attention deficit. Junk foods are also associated with learning disabilities like dyslexia and ADHD. If you, as an adult, choose to snack on junk foods all the time instead of consuming your regular meals and healthy foods, you may experience hair fall and dull skin in addition to other health disorders mentioned above. What are the effects of junk food on children?Children often tend to skip their meals and replace the missed calories with snacks that are high in both sugars and fats. Research shows that this could lead to a negative impact on the child’s behaviors.
Apart from their ill effects on health, junk foods have many other adverse effects on kids as well. High fat foods can cause children to become more aggressive, prone to violence, and highly irritable. Processed foods and junk foods often have additives and chemicals that foster addictive behaviors. The brain also reacts adversely to these foods and this leads to overeating. Overeating itself leads to other health issues such as obesity and related health risks. A number of small scale studies show that gorging on junk foods instead of healthy meals can also cause learning disabilities like dyslexia. As these foods affect the brain, poor nutrition in a child’s early life leads to a number of health problems – both physical and mental. What are the negative effects of junk foods on brain?Have you ever heard of anyone who is conscious of their brain development and cares what they eat because they are scared that it could harm their brain? It is true, we never think about how our diet can affect the development of our brain, but the truth is that our diet affects the way our body develops, and even has an effect on the brain.
Processed foods, with too many chemicals and artificial flavorings, can have a detrimental effect on brain development by impeding natural development of the brain cells. The matter of concern is that since children consume most of such foods, their brain development can be really affected. Healthy foods can prevent brain cells damage and improve its functioning. Several researches have shown that children, who get healthy meals at home, develop better and faster. They perform better at school and show well-rounded development. They are also emotionally and socially well adjusted, as compared to children who binge on junk and processed foods. Are there any harmful effects of junk food on skin?It is a well-known fact that healthy food gives you healthy skin. That being said, the reverse is also true. The more greasy and unhealthy food you eat, the more likely it is to take a toll on your skin. There is an old adage – you are what you eat, and that is certainly true.
So if you have been experiencing blotchy, oily, and acne prone skin, perhaps you need to closely examine the food you eat. Caffeinated beverages, sweets and fried foods such as burgers and fries can make your skin lose its youthfulness and elasticity, making it appear tired and aged, prematurely. These foods can prompt your skin to lose its natural oils and moisture, leaving it looking dull and uncared for. No matter how many cosmetics you apply on your skin to remedy that, you will not have any success until you decide to do something about your diet. So cut back on the cola and the chips, and include more salads and veggies in your meals. You will yourself notice the difference that these changes have on your skin. |
