Peptic Ulcer Diet

Peptic ulcers are sores which develop in the stomach lining or duodenum. Ulcers which form in the stomach are referred to as gastric ulcers, while those that develop in the duodenum are known as duodenal ulcers. A peptic ulcer can also occur in the esophagus which is the tube that connects the mouth and stomach. Peptic ulcers are usually caused by bacterial infection. The bacteria known as helicobacter pylori are responsible for the formation of peptic ulcers.

The bacteria can spread through contaminated water, food and mouth to mouth contact. The intake of certain medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs can also lead to peptic ulcers. Individuals who are above the age of 60 years and have had ulcers before are more prone to this condition. Consumption of spicy food and excess stress are not causes of peptic ulcers. They can, however, aggravate the symptoms of a peptic ulcer. Individuals with a peptic ulcer may experience symptoms such as burning and pain in the abdomen. The discomfort is likely to worsen after eating. Other symptoms of a peptic ulcer include belching, nausea, vomiting, appetite loss, weight loss and heartburn. In many cases, individual with peptic ulcers are able to consume any type of food without any problem. However there are some people who experience considerable heartburn and irritation after eating certain foods. For such individuals, a proper peptic ulcer diet is important. Here are some tips on how to get rid of ulcer pain through the diet.

It is important for people with peptic ulcers not to consume foods that are too heavy and difficult to digest. It helps to eat smaller, more frequent meals during the day as this keeps digestion balanced and steady. Meals must be eaten slowly and the food must be chewed properly. Protein is important in every meal and foods such as meat, cheese, eggs and milk should be incorporated into the diet. It is advisable to avoid eating anything for a minimum of three hours before going to bed at night. Foods that are fried and spicy are likely to increase abdominal discomfort and hence must be avoided. Also refrain from having caffeinated and carbonated beverages as these can increase acidity. Smoking aggravates heartburn and gastric trouble and hence must be completely avoided. In addition to a proper peptic ulcer disease diet, it is also essential to take the medications prescribed by the doctor on a regular basis.

Peptic ulcer disease treatment can be done through some natural remedies. However these must not become a substitute for medication. Also, one must consult a doctor before using these remedies. Fenugreek is known to coat the stomach lining and prevent excess acid secretion. Therefore drinking fenugreek tea may be helpful in alleviating symptoms of a peptic ulcer. Almond milk is also beneficial for those with peptic ulcers. Another effective natural remedy for a peptic ulcer is Indian gooseberry. The juice of raw Indian gooseberries may be consumed directly or in the form of capsules.
