Ideal Body Weight

Maintaining a healthy body weight is one of the top priorities in people’s lives today. With the increase in health consciousness and awareness of the risks of being overweight, most people are keen to ensure that they remain in their ideal body weight range as much as possible. An ideal body weight formula can be used to calculate one’s optimum weight levels. Among the earliest formulas created was Broca’s formula for arriving at the ideal weight. Devine’s and Robinson’s formulae followed.

Hanwi’s formula is the most recent, and it uses the size of the body frame of an individual as an additional variable to arrive at the right weight for a person. There are hundreds of books and websites that give ideal body weight charts based on height, age, gender, and various body frame sizes. Latest among the ideal body weight measuring techniques use a body mass index calculation to fix the ideal body weight for an individual.

Body mass index (BMI) is calculated by using the formula BMI = mass (kg) / height2 (m2) or
BMI = mass (lb.) × 703/height2 (inches2).  Ideal body weight guides interpret any BMI between 18.5 and 25 as normal or standard weight.  Anyone with a BMI exceeding 25 is considered to be overweight, while those with a BMI below 18.5 are considered underweight. A BMI of 30 and above is an indication of obesity, while a BMI of 40 and above is a sign of morbid obesity.  Calculating ideal body weight is also necessary to decide on the right dosage of certain medications. For obese people, the ideal body weight calculation is used to arrive at the adjusted body weight. When a person weighs a third more than the ideal body weight, medical professional calculate the adjusted body weight to estimate the dosage of medication required by the person.

Ideal body weight instructions and calculations that take into account only the height of the person may not be suitable for those who are looking for ideal body weight help. Age, gender and even genetic factors related to race need to be taken into account along with a person’s height when calculating the ideal body weight. Those who wish to lose weight and are on the lookout for fast weight loss tips need an ideal body weight walkthrough so that they can select the appropriate target weight. With ideal body weight tips, diet and exercise routines appropriate for their current weight and activity levels, it can help them reach their optimal weight.

Here are some tips for those who are overweight and want to lose weight to reach their ideal body weight.

• Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. These are packed with beneficial antioxidants, vitamins, and fibers that are low in calories.
• Stay away from sugary drinks, soda, and juices. Make sure you increase your intake of water as it will not only help hydrate your body but also give you a feeling of being full, but do not overdo it.
