Diarrhea is a condition that is characterized by bowel movements that are unusually frequent. There is an excessive evacuation of stools that are watery. This condition can be quite uncomfortable and is not good for your health as well as it usually indicates some kind of underlying infection. It is very important to treat diarrhea as excessive diarrhea can lead to dehydration. A diarrhea diet helps ease diarrhea. Here are some changes you can make in your diet for diarrhea related problems. • Your diarrhea diet plan should include drinking seven to ten glasses of liquids or fluids daily. This will help replace the fluids you have lost. Ginger ale, water, juices (avoid prune juice), weak tea, consommé, or broth are all good fluid sources. Until the diarrhea stops it is best you avoid milk products, caffeine, or high fiber or high sugar foods. Your diarrhea diet should also not include fatty or fried foods and carbonated drinks. • Your doctor may also suggest that you go in for a brat diet for diarrhea. A brat diet includes consuming food such as plain rice, bananas, toast, and applesauce. With a brat diet diarrhea can usually be controlled to a great extent. • A bland diet for diarrhea can work wonders especially as you get better. Bland foods such as crackers, boiled potatoes, baked chicken (fat and skin removed), and cooked carrots can supplement plain rice, bananas and toast. Once the diarrhea stops you can slowly return to a balanced and normal diet. • If your infant is suffering from diarrhea and you are still breast-feeding him/her, continue doing so on demand. For infants who are being bottle-fed, a diarrhea diet should include administering lactose-reduced formulas and lactose-free food once your child is re-hydrated. These formulas help your child meet his/her nutrient requirements. • Older children who are used to solid foods or semi-solid foods can continue eating their usual diet while suffering from diarrhea. However, you have to make sure this diarrhea diet food is bland. Cereal and legumes and cereals and milk work fine as part of a diarrhea diet. Foods such as starches (crackers, bananas, noodles, rice, and potato) and cereals (oat, wheat and rice cereals), yoghurt, fruits, cooked vegetables, and soup can be part of their diarrhea diet. • If you remove the skins, membranes and seeds from vegetables and fruits they become easier to digest. Well-cooked foods and canned foods work great as part of a diarrhea diet plan as they are easy to digest. • Try limiting your intake of dried fruits, legumes, peas, spinach, nuts, broccoli, and corn as they tend to worsen diarrhea. • If diarrhea is accompanied by cramping or gas it might help to avoid foods that increase the production of gas. These include food such as cabbage, cauliflower, onions, carbonated beverages, chewing gum, beer, Brussels sprouts, and dried peas • Eat several small diarrhea diet meals during the day instead of large meals. If your diarrhea lasts for more than two days despite following a diarrhea diet and home remedies, it is best that you get in touch with your doctor. |

Diarrhea is a common condition that can be contracted due to many reasons. If you have some sort of infection, you would require a medical examination to determine this. An infection that leads to diarrhea is also something that can only be treated with proper medication. A diet alone cannot be sufficient to treat that kind of diarrhea. The medicines would also be prescription, as opposed to over the counter, because treating that kind of diarrhea would require strong medication, and sometimes, even antibiotics may be required to deal with a more severe case. However, there are some dietary measures you can take to get rid of your diarrhea. Sometimes, diarrhea is also caused by eating the wrong kind of food, or drinking contaminated water. You may require medication prescribed by a doctor for this as well, but there are some dietary measures that will help to control the aches and pains associated with the disease as well. One of the best remedial measures to cure diarrhea is to take buttermilk. Rather than buying from a store, you should make your own. You can make this by mixing one part of plain, unsweetened, unflavored yogurt with 10 parts of water and churning this very well and thoroughly. You should also add a pinch each of sugar and salt to a glass of this mixture. The combination will arrest loose motions considerably and the buttermilk will soothe your stomach. While you have diarrhea, you must completely avoid eating anything oily, as this will only aggravate the condition. It is best to not eat for at least 12 hours after the onset of diarrhea. You can keep sipping the buttermilk or water instead. This will help to ease your stomach and cleanse your system very effectively. After that, concentrate on eating fruits such as apples, bananas and pomegranates, which are well known for their hydrating properties. Remember that diarrhea will severely dehydrate you, and you need to keep replenishing water. Another very good way to control loose motions is to make a powder of equal parts ground anise seeds and sugar. Store this in an air tight container and eat it frequently. This has excellent taste, and it is also a very quick and effective way of controlling loose and frequent motions. You can also make a paste of equal parts of dried ginger powder and honey and store it. This can be had every three hours to control diarrhea and ease your system as well. |
