Information on Carbohydrates Diet

Carbohydrate diet this term can include three different types of diet that is low-carbohydrate diet, high-carbohydrate diet and specific carbohydrate diet.

Low carbohydrate diet is often followed by people who seek to lose weight, common examples of this kind of diet involves Dr. Adkins diet and south beach diet. It is however not possible to follow these kind of diets in the long run as it is not possible to stay away or restrict the consumption of multiple foods in the diet for most of the people.

High carbohydrate diet is also followed for weight loss and also by many athletes which need to do carbohydrate loading to ensure adequate glycogen stores prior an event.

Specific carbohydrate was designed for certain disease condition like Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome or ulcerative colitis. This diet is strictly sucrose free, grain free and lactose free and is based on the theory that carbohydrates produces sugar which can cause the growth of bacteria and yeast in the intestine by acting as a source of fuel. These overgrowths can cause adverse effects and hinder the recovery of the mentioned disease conditions.

For a healthy and balanced diet it is advisable to have at least 50-60% of the total calories from carbohydrates out of which most of them should be complex in nature. A minimum amount of calories can come from simple carbohydrates according to ones requirement.
