Overweight and Obesity

Similar to overweight is obesity, although both of these terms have different definitions they are many times overlapped. Overweight and obesity have one thing in common that is excess body weight that is weight greater than what is considered ideal according to a person's height and built. Overweight means having excess body fat which can come from muscles, bones, fat or body water but obesity specifically relates to excess body fat percentage. A person can be overweight without being obese but an obese person is always overweight. Body mass index (BMI) is the criteria used to determine the range of obesity an overweight in adults.

The formula used to calculate BMI is weight (kg)/height (m2). There are more than 1 billion overweight adults globally out of which 300 million are obese. Being overweight or obese is considered an epidemic now in most of the countries as it poses a risk factor for numerous diseases like diabetes, hypertension, stroke, coronary artery disease, gall bladder disease, gout, high blood cholesterol, problems of joints like arthritis and osteoarthritis, breathing problems like sleep apnea, and some forms of caners too. Obesity is also associated with menstrual irregularities, pregnancy complications, stress intolerance, psychological disorders like depression, increased surgical risk and complications and increased mortality. The major cause for obesity and overweight is consumption of excess caloric dense foods which are high in tras fats, saturated fats and sugars and lack of physical activity.
