Though salads are often the go to food for weight loss and healthy eating, being sensible about what you put in your salads. Every vegetable also has some carbohydrates in them. So if your salad is high on potatoes and carrots, it might be a salad but a high carbohydrate salad. Just ruling out carbohydrates completely is not a good idea. The aim should be to replace carbohydrates with complex carbohydrates with even have fiber.


Salads with pastas should be substituted with whole grain pasta. If you are fond of the three bean or four bean salads, these are high carbohydrate but excellent because beans are full of fiber and are considered a good source of protein too. Salad dressings and add-ons to salads are also tricky. Learning to read labels might help in the case of readymade salad dressings but you could also learn to make your own dressings, controlling the quality of the ingredients.

Which is a good low carb salad dressing?


Salads are becoming increasingly popular as snacks and even as full meals. A salad can be prepared by anyone simply by throwing together a few easily available ingredients into a mix with some sort of dressing. Salads provide the body with nutritional variety, something that is essential for good health. A simple salad will, by definition, contain some vegetables and, perhaps, some meat sources. The problem with such salads is the dressing. Salad dressings like mayonnaise tend to be fattening, thus diminishing the benefit of the entire meal. It is therefore necessary to find some salad dressing that has low levels of fat and carbohydrates.

Olive oil is a particularly popular salad dressing. One may dress the salad directly in olive oil as it is a popular low carb salad dressing. However, one may wish to add more flavor than just the flavor of the oil. Various herbs and condiments can be added to the mix as well. Vinegar and garlic are two items that do not add any carbs to the mix. The dressing can be diluted with small amounts of water and flavored with a little bit of salt and pepper. One can try various combinations to get the taste just right.

How many carbs are there in vegetable salad?


The number of carbs in vegetable salad would depend on the ingredients you put into the salad. Some vegetables are higher in carbohydrates as compared to others and hence the number of carbs would vary from salad to salad. Green vegetables generally have fewer or no carbs at all while vegetables like winter squash and potatoes have higher carbohydrate content. The salad dressings you use can also add more carbs to the vegetable salad.

Studies have shown that in general a vegetable salad would contain an average of 5 grams of carbohydrates per serving cup. This carbohydrate count would be a total of the sugar and dietary fiber found in the salad. On the other hand the count of carbohydrates in potato salad would be around 28 grams per cup of salad. This count would also vary depending on the serving size and type of potato salad.   

Vegetables like lettuce, spinach, beans, cabbage, kale, collards and even herbs like parsley, thyme, celery, rosemary, basil and cilantro are all low in carbohydrates while vegetables like potatoes, carrots, onions and beetroots are higher in carbs. Therefore the count of carbs in vegetable salad would vary depending on what you have used in the salad.

Salads are an essential part of every meal. They are made of vegetables, fruits, legumes and so on. Dressing on salad gives a special look and taste to the salad. Mayonnaise is generally used. In case of weight reduction diets, lime juice, vinegar and olive oil are good substitutes. Cellulose in vegetables is not broken down in the system and hence raw green leaves are blended to speedup digestion and absorption. Vegetables or fruits are added to the blended salad. Certain chemical components  such as quercetin (onion), lycopene (tomatoes) and indoles (broccoli) prove beneficial to the system.
