Why is junk food bad for heart?

There are many health dangers associated with the excessive eating of junk food. Junk food causes heart diseases and other such medical problems because it is known to be high in saturated fats and transfats as well as sweeteners, sodium and so on whereas its is low in nutrients. One of the heart diseases caused by junk food is coronary heart disease wherein there is an accumulation of plaque in ones arteries which in turn tends to block or hamper the flow of oxygenated blood to the heart. Additionally junk food and heart attacks are also connected because the consumption of junk foods results in the increase of the bad cholesterol and alternatively a decrease in the levels of good cholesterol.

Another one of the heart disease caused by junk food is arteriosclerosis which refers to the hardening of the large arteries resulting in the formation of blood clots or even the rupturing of the artery on account of the accumulation of plaque over time. Similarly junk food also causes heart disease and heat failure on account of the elevated levels of transfats and saturated fats that are present in junk foods. Heart diseases are also known to increase the risk of other complications such as liver and kidney disease as well.

Is cabbage diet good for heart patient?

Cabbage is typically a low glycemic food that is known to be highly effective in controlling the insulin levels as well as in controlling the blood sugar levels. These two factors are keys to loss of weight and hence many a times doctors will recommend a cabbage diet for heart patients as obesity and being overweight are linked to many heart diseases. However there are also fad diets such as the cabbage soup for heat patients which most doctors will warn one against as they do not provide the body with the required amounts of fat, proteins,

Carbohydrates etc that are required to provide one with a balanced and healthy diet.  One of the main drawback s being on a cabbage diet alone for heart patients and even anyone else that a cabbage diet tends to have a high sodium content which is detrimental to one’s health as it will result in fluid retention and blood pressure related problems that will further aggravate the heart condition if any. Another one of the drawbacks of the cabbage diet for heat patients that it misses out on the intake of proteins and fats which are the major building blocks for good health

Heart disease or cardiovascular disease is usually caused by high cholesterol or by hypertension (high blood pressure). The disease typically affects the arteries which harden, narrow and get blocked and may cause strokes or a heart attack if not detected.

Early intervention is the key to treating heart disease. Usually major lifestyle changes (including dietary changes) are advised.

The following are some of the things to keep in mind for a heart patient:

  • Keep body weight within the recommended limits for your age and height. Excess fat, especially around the waist, has been proven to put people at increased risk for heart disease.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Engage in cardiovascular exercise such as swimming, walking, running for at least 30 minutes, at least three times a week. Check with your doctor about what exercise you should do if your condition is very delicate.
  • Avoid foods containing saturated fats, salty foods, fried foods, red meat and rich desserts which mainly contain refined sugars.
  • Foods rich in magnesium such as broccoli, tofu, spinach and wheat germ will help combat heart disease.
  • Dark chocolate, almonds, fish, fruit, vegetables and garlic are recommended in the diets of heart patients.
  • Small quantities of polyunsaturated fat and omega 3 fatty acids are recommended to lower cholesterol levels. These are typically found in oily fish, flaxseed oil and olive oil.

When designing a diet for heart patient, keep refined carbohydrates and sugars to a minimum and increase the complex carbohydrates, fiber and foods rich in minerals.

  • Breakfast: This should include one serving of fruit plus unsweetened fruit/vegetable juice, cereal like muesli which contains a number of fibrous grains and nuts with milk. Avoid sugary cereals. Eat an egg twice a week.
  • Lunch: One serving of protein - fish or chicken or cottage cheese or tofu, one serving of vegetables (eg. a salad), and two slices of whole grain bread.
  • Dinner: Soup - either vegetable or chicken soup with added vegetables, salad, and two slices of whole grain bread.

Avoid eating carbohydrates late in the night. For dessert, try and stick to fruit - the fibre and natural sugars are just what you need. When hungry between meals, have wholemeal crackers, pretzels or a banana. While preparing meals, remember not to deep fry or use too much grease. Instead try baking, poaching, roasting and boiling. Use olive oil when you must and try and have at least one serving each of raw fruit and vegetables.

The good news is that incorporating these major lifestyle changes will limit as well as often reverse the effects of heart disease. So take heart!
