If the level of estrogen increases in the body, it directly affects the weight of a woman. So estrogen can be directly responsible for weight gain. Estrogen is also the hormone in the female body responsible for ovulation. It is the reason women can produce eggs and these eggs fertilize with sperm to form a baby. Estrogen can increase due to many reasons including birth control pills and menopause. |

Does bioidentical progesterone result in weight increase?
Bioidentical progesterone made from natural herbal products is the same as the naturally occurring hormones in our body. Low progesterone tips the balance in estogen’s favour, leading to ‘estrogen dominance’. Symptoms include improper thyroid function, weight gain and loss of hair. Local application of clinically prescribed bioidentical progesterone (also called the ‘happy hormone’) will rectify the hormonal imbalance. Research shows bioidentical progesterone cream does not induce weight gain. On the contrary, bioidentical progesterone cream induces weight loss. Women on natural bioidentical progesterone cream experience a weight gain in the initial couple of months. This is because of increased levels of estrogen which results in water retention. Once the optimum estrogen-progesterone ratio is maintained, the body gradually starts responding to the treatment. Progesterone induces weight loss as it is responsible for burning calories easily. |

Does estrogen replacement cause weight gain?Studies show that weight gain, reallocation of body fat around the waist, and higher risk of heart diseases and diabetes are linked with menopause. The female hormones estrogen and progesterone produced in a woman’s ovaries are responsible for skin and muscle tones, cholesterol and sugar levels, and general functioning of the body. Hormone therapy (HRT) is sometimes recommended when there is a fluctuation in the estrogen and progestin levels. Doctors prescribe HRT for a woman (who has not undergone a hysterectomy) to alleviate acute symptoms of menopause and to avoid the risk of osteoporosis. Women who have had their uterus removed surgically are also put on estrogen therapy. Estrogen and progestin (clinically produced progesterone) can be taken orally or used as skin patches or vaginal creams. Does estrogen replacement cause weight gain? Studies show estrogen results in temporary weight gain; which however, this can be attributed to water retention in the body. Hence, estrogen replacement therapy and weight gain are not inter-linked. On the contrary, estrogen replacement therapy and weight loss go hand in hand. This is attributed to the presence of the hormone leptin in the fat cells. In addition, estrogen is known to increase appetite and is responsible for the retention of body fat. Research is still inconclusive about the association of HRT weight gain. |

Does natural progesterone cause weight gain?Does natural progesterone cause weight gain? No. Natural progesterone helps the body convert body fat to energy required for our daily activities. Weight gain is a common global problem faced by women approaching menopause. Fluctuating hormone levels lead to weight gain, ungainly skin and muscle tone, mood swings, body aches, low sex drive, as well as physical and mental fatigue. The fall in estrogen and/or progesterone levels is what causes these symptoms. Doctors thus prescribe hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in the form of pills, tablets, and skin and vaginal creams. Decrease in progesterone alone (medically known as estrogen dominance) upsets the progesterone-estrogen ratio. Progesterone therapy helps balance this shortfall. Natural progesterone and side effects: Low levels of natural progesterone result in mood swings, depression, erratic blood sugar, increased appetite, low metabolism, low libido, hypothyroidism, and water retention. Local application of clinically approved natural progesterone can correct the imbalance without any side effects. Natural progesterone cream and weight gain: A slight increase in weight is experienced in the first two months because of the rise in estrogen levels, resulting in water retention and a sense of ‘bloating’. Once the hormone balance is maintained, there is a weight loss as the progesterone helps burn all the accumulated fat off easily. |

Can Low Estrogen Cause Weight Gain?
As a side effect, the production of ‘male hormone’ increases, leading to male traits wherein body fat from the buttocks and thighs shifts position and accumulates around the waist. Not only do low estrogen and weight gain go hand in hand, this also leads to heart problems. Low collagen leads to drier skin, sagging tissue, and loose muscle tone. Low estrogen manifests as mood swings due to the changes of endorphins and serotonin levels in the brain. Increase in serotonin levels make the body crave for high calorie foods, resulting in more body flab. |

Hormones Weight Gain Weight gain could be depressing especially in women. Despite strict diet and exercise women tend to gain .This can be possible due to hormones that can cause certain side effects in the body. Estrogen tends to be balanced with the other hormones like progesterone in women and testosterone in men. If this balance hamper, it can lead to disorders. With aging, there is decline in the hormones that can balance estrogen. Thus the androgen present tends to get converted to estrogen thus leading to excess of estrogen. Increased levels of estrogen leads to increase in the estrogen sensitive tissues thus leading to excessive size of adipose tissue causing deposition of fat in belly, buttocks, thighs and back. These fatty tissues are resistant to fat burning leading to boosting of estrogen and the estrogen tends to increase the adipose tissue thus causing a viscous cycle. When the estrogen levels falls the androgen levels go up thus shifting the deposition of fat from hips, butt and back in women to abdomen thus producing an apple shaped body structure of the body as in men. Low progesterone levels as compared to estrogen tend to cause bloating and water retention and can lead to puffiness on the face and eyes, hands and fingers and fluctuating blood sugar levels. Correct eating is essential for a healthy lifestyle. Cut down fatty and high caloric foods like fried foods, fast foods, carbonated beverages, sweets, candies and animal fats. Incorporate fiber like whole grain cereals, whole pulses, legumes, vegetables and fruits that can provide both soluble and insoluble fibre.Vegetables and fruits contain certain phytonutrients like flavonoids and indole that can be helpful in maintaining the balance of the hormones.Drink plenty of water. Regular exercise is essential for toning of the muscles and the body. |
