Balanced diet

Following a well balanced diet is essential for every individual so as to have and maintain good health and overall well being. One needs to understand that the body requires certain minerals via food that are required for the regular functioning of the body processes and the fatty acids that are present in these minerals are also required to enable the movement of fluids in the body, coagulation of blood,   maintaining body temperature and also activation of the enzymes.

Balanced diet information will also state various foods that supply one with energy and these will include fats, proteins and carbohydrates. A balanced diet basically involves eating the right foods in the right combinations and proportions, and not starving oneself to achieve a certain desirable weight. One of the main components of a balanced diet is grains which should ideally be whole grains as opposed to refined grains. This is because whole grains and whole grain products such as breads, pastas, cereals etc are known to have a high nutritional value and are also rich in fiber.  Whole grains should hence form an integral part of one’s daily diet.

Similarly another important component of a balanced diet is vegetables as they are a rich source of vitamins and antioxidants. One should consume vegetables daily in their natural form as far as possible as processing vegetable or overcooking them tends to destroy their nutritional value.  Those who intend on following a well balanced diet should try and incorporate at least four servings of vegetables in their daily meals. Just like vegetables, fruits are also known to be rich in minerals and vitamins and make for a great snack as well.

It is always advisable to consume fruits in their whole form rather than juices as one can take the advantage of the fiber that is present in plenty in the pulp of the fruits. A balanced diet should also contain plenty of protein rich foods such as meats, beans, fish, nuts, seeds as proteins are basically the building blocks of the body that are required for the health and development of the bones, teeth and overall skeletal structure of the individual. On the other hand one should minimize or eliminate sugars and oils from one’s daily diet as they are only known to be empty calories that result in weight gain and the related illnesses in the individual.
