Tomatoes and Lycopene

Is tomato sauce healthy? Is it ok to include a lot of tomato sauce in daily diet or is there a limit to be followed?
(August 4, 2011)

Lycopene is the compound in tomatoes that gives tomatoes its bright red color. It is also an antioxidant which is known for its qualities to fight free radicals in the body. Lycopene has also shown progress in preventing different types of cancers, including the commonly found prostate cancer. It’s not just lycopene that makes tomato such a favored fruit. It has many other nutrients that help in many other illnesses and conditions.

There is no limit on how much tomato can be ingested in a day. But tomato sauce, especially if it is not homemade, can pose a different problem from a calorie count and health point of view. Eating too much of tomato cannot really harm you but readymade tomato sauce might need to be restricted as it has other additions like sugar and preservatives. If one has to include ketchup in your daily diet, include ketchup made from organic tomatoes.

The tomatoes need to be cooked along with the garlic, onion and bay leaves. Water can then be added and salt and sugar can be used for seasoning. Cover and boil this mixture and on cooling grind to a puree. In another pan fry 1 tablespoon chopped onions and ½ tablespoon chopped garlic. Is tomato sauce a healthy dinner?

There are two types of tomato sauce that may feature in one’s daily diet. Tomato sauce may be made from fresh tomatoes with seasoning added to it in the form of various herbs, salt and pepper. This type of tomato sauce is often called tomato puree as well. Tomato sauce is regularly used in Italian cooking and even in some Indian dishes. Depending on the dish and the cuisine, the sauce may form a mainstay of the meal. Pasta with tomato sauce in a dinner party is quite common. This is quite a healthy food item, providing the consumer with dietary fiber, vitamin K, Magnesium, Manganese and Thiamin amongst other items.

The other use for the term tomato sauce refers to the ketchup that is used as a seasoning for various foods, most often for fried foods like French fries or batter fried fish. In this case, the tomato sauce is not a very great source of nutrition. One can certainly say that tomato sauce on its own will not form a decent meal. Most brands of ketchup tend to be sugary and filled with artificial flavoring and preservatives. While these may lengthen the shelf life of the bottle, they do not add to its nutritional goodness.

Tomato sauce or ketchup is a common part of our diets. One generally related to ketchup with pizzas, fries and other forms of junk food. It is found almost everywhere and has some strong health benefits. One very important part of Tomato sauce is Lycopene. Lycopene is a phytochemical that also acts as a powerful antioxidant, helping reduce risk of the prostate, oesophageal and breast cancer. Lycopene is also effective toward avoiding heart diseases. Lycopene is also a pigment that makes watermelon pink and tomatoes red. Lycopene is also found in fresh guava, papaya, pink grapefruit and other tomato products.

The best source of Lycopene is cooked or processed items such as tomato-based pasta sauce, paste, soup, bottles salsa, juice, chili sauce and ketchup. It is said that when tomatoes are cooked, they create more lycopene than when raw. When these foods are consumed with a little fat, the lycopene is better absorbed. It is infact, said by some that ketchup is a better source for lycopene than whole tomotoes. The Cancer Research Foundation of America found that cooked tomatoes, like those used to make ketchup, have five times the amount of lycopene as fresh tomatoes.

However, in the past there has been flack about Ketchup and how it is detrimental in a healthy diet. As they say, too much of anything is bad. The same goes for Ketchup. The amount of sodium and preservatives in the ketchup does not exactly make it a healthy part of our diets. One must moderate consumption of ketchup and restrict it to an occasional consumption. Ketchup is consumed mostly with junk food. Mixing it with our daily diets causes imbalance in the nutritional scale, hence it must be controlled.

Anything that is organic does not mean it is healthy. Be weight, ketchup is almost 25% sugar. One of the main ingredients of ketchup is a high fructose corn syrup - a highly processed and unhealthy sugar sweetener. Also, Ketchup is relatively high in salt as well-which when consumed in very large amounts increases the blood pressure.

One can have the odd pizza or fries or a hot dog. If the occasion calls for junk and ketchup, so be it. But then, it is up to us, how much of a daily cycle we will make this become in our diets. Some have suggested mustard sauce as an alternative for ketchup. Some even swear by it.
