Information on Fish Oil

Do canned fish considered oily, such as tuna and salmon?
(August 8, 2011)

Fish like tuna and salmon are considered to be oily fish on account of the high levels of omega 3 essential fatty oils present in them. However one needs to keep in mind that in case of canned fish such as salmon and tuna the entire processing of canning them tends to take a toll on the nutrient value of the fish on account of the degree as well as the duration of the heat the fish is exposed to. Fish oil and the omega 3 acids present therein tend to minimize the triglyceride levels present in the bloodstream of the individual which are otherwise known to be related to heart disease and other cardiovascular conditions. Research has also shown that the omega 3 essential oils obtained from fish such as tuna and salmon when they are consumed fresh or even canned are the most ideal for the body as they are easily absorbed.

Does fish oil lower cholesterol?

Does fish oil lower cholesterol? The jury is still out on this question. This is because fish oil contains a small amount of cholesterol, so by taking it, it will still contribute to the rise of bad cholesterol. However, here are some facts about fish oil and how it helps cholesterol. Cholesterol is needed in the body to manufacture cell membranes, hormones and so on. Cholesterol travels through the bloodstream in small particles called lipoproteins. Lipoproteins are made up of protein molecules and fat. The more protein, the better for arterial health as they are denser. High density lipoproteins are known as HDL’s. Low density lipoproteins are known as LDL’s. LDL’s contain fewer proteins and thus tends to clog the blood vessels. Fish oil, however, does lower triglyceride levels in the body and thus reduces the chance of getting a heart attack. This brings us back to the question of fish oil for cholesterol control. If you wish to use fish oil to lower cholesterol, remember this lowering of cholesterol depends on the type of fish oil you are using. Some fish oils help to reduce the overall cholesterol level while some fish oils have no effect on cholesterol at all. High quality fish oils contain high levels of Omega 3 fats and will help to lower cholesterol.

Salmon, mackerel, trout, pilchards and sardines all count as oily fish, whether canned or fresh. This is because the canning process does not reduce the fat content of the fish. Fresh tuna is an oily fish and is high in fatty acids. However, when tuna is canned, the fatty acids are reduced to levels similar to white fish. This happens as tuna is cooked before canning and therefore most of the oil is lost in the process. So although it is a healthy choice for many, it does not count as oily fish.

Oily fish is an excellent source of protein and also contains fewer harmful fats and calories. The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish help prevent heart disease. Most people should eat more of oily fish as these fatty acids are very good for the heart. These are most beneficial to pregnant and breastfeeding women as they help in the development of a baby’s nervous system. Oily fish like mackerel, trout, herring, sardines and salmon are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. Mussels, squid, crab and oysters are kinds of shellfish that provide these fatty acids, but not as much as oily fish do. Eating at least two portions of fish (including one of oily fish a week) is considered beneficial for one’s health.  One portion amounts to 140 grams.  Women who are planning a pregnancy or women who are pregnant or nursing should not eat more than two portions of oily fish a week. Other women, men and boys can eat up to four small or regular portions a week.

There are limits as to how much oily fish can be included in a person’s diet as this type of fish often contain low levels of pollutants that are harmful for the body as they build up over time. These pollutants include dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s). The recommended amount of oily fish is lower for most girls and women as high levels of PCB’s and dioxins in their diet could later affect the development of a baby. A sudden change in diet when pregnant will not change the levels of PCB’s or dioxins in one’s body so it is better to limit the intake from a young age.

You do not have to give up eating oily fish completely. The health benefits outweigh the risks provided you stick to the recommended quantities. Make sure that you discuss any change in diet with your doctor if you are trying to conceive.
