Good Eating Habits

What are the benefits of maintaining meal timings?
(June 9, 2010)

Maintaining proper meal timings is not only an healthy eating habit but also most critical for the human body. Regular meals supply the body with constant and steady energy to keep it moving throughout the day. It is very easy to get caught up in this fast paced world, but this should not be done at the risk of your health. Getting caught up with work, neglecting your meals, lack of sleep, and munching on unhealthy, ready-to-eat snacks, all these are contributory factors to ill health.

Our bodies are programmed in such a way that they send signals when they need energy.

Headaches, a rumbling stomach, heartburn, and loss of focus and concentration are common signs of hunger. But most of the times we ignore these signs or fix the situation by munching on some unhealthy snack due to the paucity of time.

So, what is so important about meal timings? When you ignore the hunger signs and push ahead without eating, you send signals to your body that there are no nutrients coming down the pipe. So your body responds to this by subduing the hunger signs and slowing down the metabolism. Now your body starts utilizing the next available source of energy—own lean muscle. The body also conserves whatever fat is available so that it can use it to deal with further starvation. Thus, when you don’t eat meals at regular intervals and ignore your body’s signals, you end up losing muscle mass and storing fat. This can lead to unhealthy weight gain, which in turn can lead to many diseases.

The best time to eat food is when you feel hungry. That is the best way to realize that you need to eat something, as your body is in need of nutrients and energy. Ideally, you should eat something every 3-4 hours as that is the time your body requires to convert food into energy. Most of us are victims of unwanted weight due to our faulty eating habits. Maintaining your meal timings is the key to healthy living. If you consume your meals routinely at the same time, your body starts producing enzymes everyday at the same time. The sensory nerves start sending signals to the body organs and they start working as per that schedule. Eating meals on time is a sign of living a disciplined life.  If you maintain proper meal timings you are already on the path to living a healthy and happy life. Try and adopt a diet and meal timing that suits your lifestyle.
