Low Carb Diet Pregnancy 

Low carb diets comprise of foods that supply fats and protein, instead of carbohydrates. In general, physicians abstain from prescribing any kind of diets, due to the increased risk of nutrient deficiencies. Highly digestible carbohydrates are not preferred. It is one of the commonly followed diet pattern for weight reduction. In spite of the controversies that exist, low carb diet plans are preferred due to their easy results that are speedy and noteworthy.

Low carb diet in pregnancy calls for medical attention, as it might contribute to complications. Carbohydrates are necessary in pregnancy. Fat breakdown for energy results in ketosis.


Consumption of healthy carbohydrates in pregnancy is of great importance, as the development and growth of the fetus is otherwise affected. Certain low carb diet plans, such as South beach diet and Atkin's diet recommends the 'maintenance' phase form women in the pregnant and lactating phase. Removal of refined foods, such as white pasta, white rice and white bread is considered, intake of fruits, whole grains and carbohydrates in the natural form is recommended. Constipation in pregnancy is the common outcome of low carb diet in pregnancy. At least, 10 to 15 grams of dietary fiber is included in the daily diet. Low carbs are also recommended in gestational diabetes. About 6 to 8 ounces of water is recommended. Clear liquids are also preferred. Some of the low carb foods are listed below:

  • apple slice with cheese
  • pork rinds
  • mushroom and cheese dip
  • low carb snack bars
  • low carb shakes
  • meat roll with vegetables
  • cheese sticks
  • spinach dip and luncheon meat
  • peanut butter and meat roll and so on

The Atkin's diet is one of the commonly followed low carb diet. It consists of three phases, namely

  • induction phase
  • weight loss phase and
  • final phase

Weight loss is at its peak in the second stage. The 'induction' and weight loss phases of Atkins diet are not recommended for pregnant women.

In the case of Atkin's diet, more carbs are recommended in the maintenance phase. High protein foods such as sea foods, meat and poultry are useful. Avocados, olive flax seed provide necessary fats. One serving of fruits, such as grapefruits, raspberries and blueberries are recommended. Hydrogenated fats and saturated Trans fats are completely abstained from. The extreme phases of low carb diets are not suggested during pregnancy. Any kind of diet in pregnancy requires the guidance of a physician. Avoid following any kind of diets, especially during pregnancy.
