What is Angina?

Angina is the pain or discomfort that occurs in the chest. It usually appears when any part of the heart muscle does not get sufficient oxygenated blood. You feel pressure or squeezing in your chest. This can also be followed by pain in the arms, neck, shoulder or back.

It’s important to know that angina is not actually a disease, but rather the sign of an underlying dysfunction of the heart.
Angina is usually the symptom of a common type of heart disease known as coronary artery disease. Coronary heart disease is caused by the building up of a plaque on the inner walls of the coronary arteries. The plaque is a fatty material that blocks the oxygenated blood from reaching the heart. In science, this condition is called atherosclerosis.

Types of Angina

There are three types of angina that include stable, unstable and variant angina. All three have different symptoms and require different methods of treatment.

Stable Angina: This is the most common type of angina. Stable angina occurs when the heart works harder than usual. It has a regular pattern of occurrence, and people with stable angina can predict when the pain is likely to occur. The pain allays in a few minutes. Medicine is also available to curb this angina.

Unstable Angina: Contrary to stable angina, this does not have a pattern of occurrence, and may come up even without any physical exertion of the body. Unstable angina is dangerous for health, and requires immediate treatment. It is a valid sign of a heart attack.

Variant Angina: Variant angina usually occurs when a person is at rest. Though variant angina is rare, its pain can be extremely severe. Variant angina is treated by medicine.

Angina Diet And Information On Angina

A well-made dietary plan can help angina patients. The aim of the dietary treatment is to improve the flow of blood to your heart and make your heart more energetic so that it requires lesser oxygen.

Consume lesser fats and cholesterol. Increase magnesium in your diet in order to improve the energy metabolism of the heart. Add a number of green vegetables such as spinach, green mustard and green turnips in your diet as these are rich in magnesium.
Exclude all dairy products from your diet except for skim milk, egg white, and yogurt. Consume a diet which is rich in fiber. Raw foods are good sources of fiber. Eat chicken and fish for proteins. Onions and garlic can help you reduce your cholesterol levels and should also be consumed.

Angina patients must strictly avoid caffeinated products, tobacco, alcohol, chocolate, butter and fried and processed foods.
