The Margosa (Azadirachta indica) tree has long been a part of traditional Indian medicine. This wonderful plant has a number of uses. Perhaps one of the most famous recent uses is that of Margosa as an insecticide.  The compound found in Margosa has been patented by a US pharmaceutical company and is now sold as an insecticide all over the world. This Margosa based insecticide is found to be effective against 150 different species of insects and does not leave behind any undesirable residue.

Margosa is also a powerful antiseptic and Margosa water is widely used in India to treat skin diseases and chicken pox sores.

The twig of the Margosa tree is used as a toothbrush cum toothpaste in rural India. Villagers chew on this twig every morning to clean their teeth. Oil from the Margosa tree is also found to cause an anti-fertility effect on women.

A lot of Ayurvedic preparations utilize Margosa as a key ingredient. Margosa based medicine is used to treat skin infections, leprosy, and leucoderma. The bark of the tree is also used to treat malarial fevers. The abundance of Vitamin A found in Margosa leaves are very useful for combating night blindness. Washing hair in Margosa water is said to promote hair growth.

It is important that the various facets of this wonderful plant be studied in a scientific manner so that it can be properly applied in modern medicine. This will require a concentrated effort by various teams of scientists and major funding, but the possible results should be well worth the labor and expenses incurred.

Margosa is another name for neem. Margosa as a plant is very therapeutic and has many uses. Margosa or neem has many uses and is a recommended herb in many alternate healing therapies like Ayurveda and herbal medicines.

The tree is usually an evergreen, largely found in India.  The tree grows to a height of 10 to 11 meters and is about 2 meters in width. The margosa leaf has a distinct shape. The leaf is actually small leaflets; each leaflet is like a complete leaf in its structure. Each part of the margosa tree has a medicinal use and it can be considered a veritable treasure of cures.

Let’s start with the leaves. Margosa, its extract and its leaves all are good for your hair and health. The mixture of crushed margosa leaves is good to cure a malarial infection. Juice of the leaves is good for the hair and scalp to improve its health. The paste of margosa leaves is known to help cure many skin diseases, including leprosy. It can also be used to treat boils, measles, chicken pox, small pox, syphilitic sores, and injuries. Drinking a juice of leaves can also be a tonic for the liver. It has anti arthritic properties and can reduce the suffering caused by pain of swollen joints.

 A balm made from margosa leaves can also help in curing ulcers and gashes. A decoction of margosa and water can cure ear aches. Application of the paste on a pregnant woman before labor can aid normal delivery.  Even the use of leaves in a vaginal douche after delivery can tremendously reduce the chances of any kind of infections and injuries that have occurred during delivery. The leaves are also helpful in hemorrhoids, syphilis, leucoderma, insecticidal and expectorant. The leaves, used as a poultice, can also relieve itching of lice. This tree and its various parts have been known to even prevent cancer.  Though not yet medically advised, some tumors have been known to shrink when leaves and fruits of this tree have been consumed. The tree even has properties that can check secretions and blood loss. It can help deal with removing gas and removing phlegm from bronchial tubes while clearing urine.

The tree’s bark and branches have many other uses. The bark of the tree is bitter and astringent. The twigs from the tree are used to clean teeth and it can control problems like bleeding and sore gums. A mouthwash using margosa essential oil is known to prevent mouth ulcers.

The bark with jaggery can cure piles. Eating few margosa fruits with water is also a known home remedy for piles. Margosa is used for many ailments. It is known to help chronic skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, eczema and ringworm.  It can help the scalp to get rid of dandruff and falling hair. Margosa has blood purifying properties and is an anti bacterial. The oil from the tree along with the leaves and barks is used in soaps, shampoos and other cosmetics, to use its anti bacterial properties.
