Fad diet weight loss causes the skin to sag:

Sagging skin due to weight loss.

A rapid weight loss in a short span of time often causes the skin to sag giving an unappealing appearance to the body. The only solution to this problem is gradual weight loss over a period of time. Often many fad diets or near starvation diets (which involve restriction of more than one food group in the diet) can cause quick weight loss in a short span of less than few weeks. This weight loss process is however considered a very unhealthy way as it plays with your body metabolism. Most of the weight lost is in the form of water loss and muscle loss from the body.

After the diet period is over in such diets and after you start your regular lifestyle like before you will experience weight gain at a lightening speed. So the best way to lose weight is by following a combination of healthy diet and physical activity. The following diet tips listed below will help you to lose weight without causing your skin to sag -

  1. Set a realistic goal to lose not more than ½ kg per week with the help of a balanced diet and exercise.
  2. Focus on a low fat diet which is high in complex carbohydrates and proteins. Include whole grains, cereals and its products along with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables for carbohydrates. However avoid simple form of carbohydrates; that is sweets, sugary foods, bakery foods like cakes, pastries and cookies, sweetened fruit juices, carbonated beverages, sodas and colas.
  3. Include proteins in all your meals, you can choose from low fat or fat free dairy products, lean cuts of meat and poultry, fish, egg whites, beans, sprouts and pulses. Other shell fish, organ meats like brain, liver and kidney, egg yolks and fatty meats are also high in proteins but they also supply good amount of saturated fat and cholesterol in the diet which is the main cause for weight gain.
  4. Fats in any form should be restricted like fatty, fried or oily foods, junk foods, and processed or refined foods to prevent weight gain.
  5. Drink a lot of water in the day to ensure proper skin elasticity and avoid dehydration.
  6. Besides diet, a regular exercise regime should be followed along with increasing the physical activity and avoiding a sedentary lifestyle. Aerobic exercises and cardio workouts will not only help you to lose weight but also help to boost your metabolism. Involve yourself in activities you love like gardening, swimming, cycling, jogging, brisk walking or playing table tennis instead of being a couch potato that restricts your physical activity.
