GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease is also referred to as acid reflux or heartburn. It occurs when the acids from the stomach back up and travel upwards into the esophagus. This happens because the muscles at the end of the esophagus are unable to close properly in order to prevent the contents of the stomach from backing up.

The symptoms of GERD include burning in the chest and throat. There may also be an acidic taste in the mouth.


If these symptoms are experienced more than a couple of times a week, only then is the condition termed as GERD. In addition, there may also be other symptoms such as difficulties in swallowing and pain.

Treatment for GERD involves a combination of medication and dietary and lifestyle changes.


Regulating the dietary habits goes a long way in alleviating the symptoms of GERD.

Individuals dealing with this condition are advised to identify those foods which trigger symptoms in them and those foods which do not. There are some foods which cause these symptoms in most individuals, and hence must be avoided.


One of the initial steps that one needs to take in treating GERD is to stop eating large meals. Also foods that are rich in fat, apart from adding cholesterol to the body, are also difficult to digest and hence are more likely to trigger acid reflux. 

A GERD diet must avoid fried foods, chocolate, tea and coffee and certain fruits such as orange, grapefruit and lemon. Juices of these fruits must also be avoided.


Acidic foods such as tomato and raw onions are also not beneficial for GERD. Most people with GERD face problems when consuming dairy products and hence it is best to avoid them. Alcohol can also aggravate the problem.

Foods that can be tolerated well by the body in case of GERD include fruits such as bananas and apples as these are non-acidic. Vegetables that are considered safe for GERD are cabbage, broccoli, carrots, baked potatoes and beans. Lean ground beef and chicken breast may also be consumed safely. Fish is another healthy addition to the diet and is considered to be GERD friendly.

Certain types of cheeses such as soy based cheese, feta or cream cheese are also known to be tolerated well. In addition to dietary changes, maintaining proper posture during and after meals is also important. There must be at least a two hour gap after consuming food and before going to bed at night. Unhealthy habits such as smoking must also be discontinued immediately as they can worsen the condition.
