Even for people who have not been diagnosed with diabetes, a diet for lowering blood sugar is can be opted for every now and then to keep diabetes at bay. However, you should get tested to see whether you are more prone to high or low blood sugar levels. For people who have higher than normal blood sugars, it is important to maintain a diet for lowering blood sugar so that they do not develop diabetes.

However, most doctors agree that having a diet for lowering blood sugar is the safest and simplest way to maintain this disease. While it is not impossible to live with diabetes, it is best to control it right in the beginning so that it does not worsen with age.

Most diabetics are also advised to lower the amount of carbohydrate intake. This is recommended because carbohydrates, especially simple carbohydrates, can breakdown into glucose very fast, causing a sudden surge in the blood sugar.

A low carbohydrate diet, inclusive of simple carbohydrates and proteins, is the best way to control your diabetes.


There are some foods that have a low glycemic index, which do not release large quantities of glucose on digestion. These are ideally healthy for a diabetic. Sweet potatoes, avocados, and nuts are excellent for those with diabetes. There are many fruits that are also healthy for a diabetic. With proper diet, blood sugar levels can be brought down drastically. Other foods like white potatoes, yams, rice, candies, chocolates, cookies, and refined flours should be carefully avoided.

Since with diet, diabetes can be controlled, this is the best way to control the disease and to make sure that your quality of life remains good. Avoiding high glycemic foods and preferring complex carbohydrates is usually the best way to deal with diabetes and its symptoms. Consume foods that are rich in vitamin C as this vitamin is acidic in nature and has a tendency of lowering the glycemic index of those foods which are high on it. Raw foods, barley, yarrow, flaxseed, herbs, and spices are allowed in a diet for lowering blood sugar.

To get the right management of one’s blood sugar levels one needs to eat a diet that is healthy and nutritious. One should also get some amount of exercise and also watch their weight. It is not so much of watching one’s sugar as keeping an eye on one’s overall diet. This diet has to be a balanced diet always. There are various ways in which one can monitor their sugar and glucose levels. It is also essential for these people to achieve this by following a few simple rules. One should always eat the similar quantity of food on a daily basis. They should also ensure that all the meals they eat are consumed on time. If they eat too late they can cause the blood sugar levels to fluctuate drastically causing them to feel fatigued, tired etc. They need to eat a good diet but also get an adequate amount of exercise on a daily basis. On a daily basis they should eat those foods that contain starches. They also need to eat fruits, vegetables, milk, meat and yogurt. People who suffer from high blood sugar levels need to watch their intake of sweets and also the fats in their daily diets. Their diets should contain the correct mixture of high and also low glycemic foods.

If they do not watch their diets they are more prone to suffering from some kidney disease or eye diseases or nerve diseases. They are also simultaneously required to monitor their cholesterol levels and their lipid levels.  This can help in lowering and cardiovascular problems that accompany a blood sugar level problem. A diet for a woman should include approximately 1200 calories in a day. This will include about 5 to 6 starches, about 2 portions of milk or yogurt, 3 to 4 servings of vegetables, 2 to 3 portions of meat or any meat substitute, about 2 portions of fruit and at least 2 to 3 fat servings. Similarly a man should be getting about 1600 to 2000 calories on a daily basis. This will include about 7 to 8 portions of starches, about 2 to 3 portions of yogurt and milk, about 3 to 4 servings of vegetables, approximately 2 portions of meat or the meat substitutes, up to 3 servings of fruit and about 4 to 5 servings of fat. One should gauge what the correct calorie intake should include depending on their Body mass index. One should contact a dietician too.
