It is common to feel an itching or burning sensation in the eyes. Our eyes are subjected to an increasing amount of stress due to staring for prolonged intervals at the screens of our computers and TV. When the eyes are used continuously all through the day, it is only natural for them to get tired by the end of it. On top of that, the strain is almost doubled due to the constant pollution in the air. Some of the major causes of itchy eyes are:
- Allergies from foreign particles, pollen, smoke, chemicals and dust are the most common causes of itching in the eyes.
- If your eyes are very dry or if you have fever, then too your eyes may feel as if they are burning from the inside.
- When the immune system is not very strong and there is a constant attack of bacteria and other parasites, the eyes may get affected.
- Certain medications may dry up your eyes, causing an itchy and sticky feeling.
- Common cold is another extremely communicable condition which causes watering or itching of the eyes.
Home Remedies for Itchy Eyes: While most people turn to medications to remedy these problems, a simpler solution lies in home remedies and a planned and proper diet. While medicinal treatment for itchy eyes should be taken only after consultation with a doctor, there are home remedies which can be used to obtain relief from itchy eyes instantly.
For keeping the eyes relaxed and cool, you can apply a cold compress to your face and eyes. Raw grated apples can also be made into a poultice and applied on the eyes. To cool the eyes, you can use rose water, mouthwash (non-alcohol based), or cucumber juice.
Over a period of time, if you want to keep your eyes healthy, it is important to consume a diet which is high in vitamins and minerals. This helps the body to boost their immunity. Vitamins B, C and E are especially important in order to improve immunity. Vitamin A rich foods help keep the eyes healthy too. The rods and cones, small cellular structures which enable the eyes to distinguish colors from each other and see in the dark, can be kept healthy by consuming good amounts of beta carotene and vitamin A.
Some of the foods rich in vitamin A and beta carotene are carrots, sweet potatoes, eggs, mangoes, apricots, papaya, Indian gooseberry, cheese, cod liver oil, water cress, and red paprika.
