Backache is an ailment that is most commonly prevalent today. They are caused by sedentary living habits, work patterns which are hazardous, and emotional and psychological stress, all which cause muscle spasms leading to backaches. People who are overweight are also prone to backaches as the back carries the weight of the entire body, which, in turn, leads to back strain. Here are a few backache remedies that will help ease the problem and give you some relief. • One of the most effective backache cures is one that involves using garlic. You should eat 3 to 4 cloves of garlic daily to see results.
Applying garlic oil to your back is also an effective backache treatment. Allow the oil to seep in, and then have a hot water bath. • Using a cold compress helps relieve back pain. Wrap some ice in water and massage the affected area with it. However, applying heat to the affected area is also one of the most effective backache remedies. If your backache is due to a recent injury, use the cold compress; if your backache is chronic, use a hot compress. Some doctors even advise alternating between the two. • Brisk walks and regular exercises help strengthen your spine muscles. Try and take a 20 to 30 minute walk every day to make the back stronger. In fact, the entire vertebral column benefits from such exercise. • Two effective backache remedies include (a) consuming a glass of warm water with honey and (b) adding a little common salt to the juice of a lemon and drinking this twice a day. • Some remedies for backache recommend the use of raw potato. Applying this as a poultice helps. Cut a peeled potato into cubes and boil it. Once they cool mash them and apply the poultice to your back. Let it stay there with the help of a bandage for about an hour or so. • Along with backache remedies, a person suffering from pain should consume a diet that consists of raw vegetables such as cabbage, carrot, tomato, lettuce, radish, and the like. Along with this he/she should eat two lightly cooked or steamed vegetables such as spinach, carrot, cabbage, and cauliflower. Plenty of fruits should be included in the diet except for bananas. Breakfast should comprise of milk and fruit, and whole wheat tortillas, steamed vegetables for lunch, fruit juice and fresh fruits in the evening, and raw salad and sprouts for dinner. • For those who have to stand on their feet for long it is advisable to wear practical footwear. Avoid wearing heels that are too high as it can strain your back further. • Mint oil helps in relieving backache. Massage your back lightly with some mint oil for quick relief. • Foods that have Vitamin C content such as tomatoes, citrus fruits, strawberries and blueberries should be included in your diet. • Another home remedy for backache is turpentine oil. Massaging your back with this oil can be quite beneficial for backache. • One of the easiest backache remedies is for tea drinkers. Simply add about 4 to 5 black peppercorns, 1 gm ginger (dry powder), and 5 cloves to the boiling water while preparing your tea. Drink this twice daily for pain relief. • Complementary therapies such as aromatherapy, acupressure, yoga, meditation, hydrotherapy, Ayurveda, back flower remedies, and juice therapy can be tried to get backache relief. • Work at improving your posture as this will help prevent or eliminate a number of back problems. Prevention as they say is better than cure. So make sure you exercise regularly and stay active. Instead of standing or sitting in one position move around whenever possible and take short breaks.
