Grapefruit Diet

The grapefruit diet is one of the most well-known short term fad diets, which has also been given the moniker of the Hollywood diet. It has become popular through word of mouth, as it has been passed on from one dieter to another, for over thirty years. The grapefruit diet aims at weight loss of about 52 pounds in 10 weeks (2½ months). As the name suggest, grapefruit is the most integral, part of the grapefruit diet. There are several grapefruit benefits, as the fruit is high in fiber and Vitamin C, it contains simple carbohydrates, has small amounts of sodium and calories and contains no fat.

Grapefruit is also believed to act as an appetite suppressant because of which, it promotes weight loss. Recent researches have also confirmed that adding grapefruit and grapefruit juice to your daily diet can help in weight loss considerably. The idea behind this diet is to make use of the grapefruit or grapefruit juice benefits, which can reduce fat, with the help of its fat burning enzymes. It can cause weight loss at a faster pace, mainly due to the loss of fluids in the body, which is why it is an ideal way to jumpstart weight loss plans.

Grapefruit Diet Menu

A grapefruit diet plan comprises breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack. A person following this diet does not have to starve or go hungry for long periods of time. However, it is important to follow the diet to the tee, without skipping a single meal or eliminating a single item that is suggested in the plan. Given below is a sample of a grapefruit diet menu plan:

Breakfast

  • ½ Grapefruit or 8 ounces of unsweetened grapefruit juice
  • 2 eggs (cooked in any style)
  • 2 slices of bacon

Lunch

  • ½ Grapefruit or 8 ounces of unsweetened grapefruit juice
  • A serving of salad, with any dressing
  • Meat cooked in any style

Dinner

  • ½ Grapefruit or 8 ounces of unsweetened grapefruit juice
  • A serving of salad, with any dressing OR a cooked green or red vegetable 
  • Fish of meat, cooked in any style
  • A cup of tea or coffee

Snack (Bedtime)

  • A cup of skim milk (8 ounces)

Grapefruit diet recipes

There are several popular grapefruit diet recipes, which include not just foods, but beverages too. Recipes like broiled grapefruit, fresh salad with grapefruit, salmon avocado with grapefruit, grilled tofu with grapefruit and avocado salsa and grapefruit chicken are included in a grapefruit diet plan. Allowances are made for those with a sweet tooth, through recipes like grapefruit cheesecake, grapefruit tarts, grapefruit ambrosia and grapefruit mousse.

However, before going in for the grapefruit diet or the grapefruit juice diet, it is very important to keep a few things in mind:

  • It is absolutely essential to drink at least 8 glasses of water each day
  • You will need to eat the minimum amounts that are listed for each meal. 
  • Eliminating even a single food item, like the bacon at breakfast or the salads during the rest of the meals the combination of the food burning the fat will be disturbed, causing the diet to fail. 
  • You may be missing out on nutrients as there are many food items that are not included in this diet. 
  • Stay on the diet for 12 days after which you can stop the diet for 2 days and then repeat it.

While the grapefruit diet has been tried by many and has also yielded results for most of them, there are no guarantees, as the results may vary for every individual. Therefore, before you begin the grapefruit diet or any other diet for that matter, it is important to check with your doctor, especially if have any medical condition.
