Nausea or vomiting may be a symptom of a wide variety of diseases and conditions. Occasionally, you may suffer from vomiting due to gastroenteritis or food poisoning. While most cases of vomiting maybe treated via diet or medications, it is best to consult your doctor if you suspect food poisoning or if the vomiting persists for more than a few hours. If you notice traces of blood in your vomiting, this could mean signs of a more life threatening condition.

If you are suffering from viral gastroenteritis, you may notice symptoms such as abdominal cramping, fever, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting. Consuming contaminated food or water may cause gastroenteritis.  While there is no effectual cure for this medical condition, the best gastroenteritis treatment is actually prevention.


Avoid food or water that is cooked or stored in unhygienic conditions. Sanitize your hands with soap, warm water, or hand sanitizers before you consume food or water.

Vomiting treatment. As part of vomiting treatment, your doctor may recommend medication depending on the cause of nausea and its severity.


If a virus has caused the vomiting, antibiotic treatment may not be very beneficial. Let your immune system flush out the toxins while you follow a careful vomiting diet. In the meanwhile, you may follow these tips related to vomiting treatment to help recover from a bout of nausea or gastroenteritis.

• If you have been vomiting continuously, it is best to rest and allow your stomach to settle down.


Avoid consumption of heavy food or fluids for a few hours.
• On a vomiting diet, you may ease your stomach by sucking on ice cubes. Take small sips of water at regular intervals to combat dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea. You may also drink small sips of soda or clear broth soups.


Stick to a liquid diet until you are certain that your stomach can handle a meal.
• You may gradually start eating solid meals. Ensure that your intake consists of easy to digest foods like rice, boiled or stewed veggies, and chicken. Leave the meat, seafood and diary products until you feel better.
• Avoid caffeinated drinks, alcohol, smoke, and high fat diary products. These may be difficult to digest and may result in resumed vomiting.

The above post-care measures may be followed as part of food poisoning diet as well. Cases of viral gastroenteritis and food poisoning are more rampant when you are travelling. Take care to drink bottled water, and avoid undercooked meat or fish or raw vegetables and fruits unless you are certain about the sanitary conditions. Ask your doctor about any preventive measures such as vaccinations that you can take in advance

Vomiting is triggered due to the reflex action produced by the brain in response to many causes. The most common factors that induce vomiting are as follows:

  • Stomach or intestine infections
  • Indigestion
  • Stomach or intestine injury
  • Motion sickness
  • Hyperacidity
  • Brain injury
  • Pregnancy

Vomiting is normally triggered when one of the abovementioned problems persist. It is usually harmless and stops by itself; however, it can be serious sometimes result in severe dehydration, especially in infants and children. Not often, but sometimes, vomiting can also be a sign of a more serious illness.

Vomiting is often treated best with natural remedies vis-à-vis medication, if the underlying problem is not severe. However, if the vomiting persists, a doctor must be consulted immediately.

Given below are some diet tips that can help in preventing vomiting sensation.To reduce the sensation of vomiting, you should have one tea spoon of honey mixed in warm water. This provides instant relief.

  • Lime juice is also very good for instant relief from the feeling of nausea.
  • Mint is very effective for curbing the vomiting sensation. You can either have raw mint leaves or put four to five leaves in boiling water and drink it. You can also put mint leaves in your food as it helps in reducing nausea.
  • Beetroot is very effective in reducing the vomiting and nausea. You can have raw beetroot in salads or you can opt for beetroot juice.
  • Warm milk or ginger tea can also alleviate the vomiting sensation. You can also simply place a piece of raw ginger between your teeth. Since ginger is a natural remedy for motion sickness, it comes in handy when the cause of vomiting is related to the same.
  • In case of severe vomiting, drink electrolyte water, rice water, or salt and sugar mixed in water to prevent dehydration.
  • Consume roasted cardamom in a mixture of honey; this is a good and effective way to stop the vomiting sensation.
  • Coconut water has natural healing capacity. Drink coconut water on a daily basis to stop the vomiting sensation. It also helps to increase immunity.
  • Butter milk is very good for digestion, and it also stops the feeling nausea. You should include butter milk in your daily diet.
  • Cumin seeds are also very good for the stomach. Boil cumin seeds in water and drink the mixture twice a day to prevent nausea.
